We remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice, 13th May 1915.

Western Front. During the Second Battle of Ypres, the Essex Yeomanry made a dismounted bayonet charge in pouring rain at Frezenburg Ridge recapturing the enemy front line trenches. Having suffered substantial casualties including the loss of the Commanding Officer, Lt Col Deacon and Major Roddick under heavy enemy artillery fire, the Regiment was ordered to withdraw together with the rest of the Brigade. 70 Essex Yeomen were killed and 91 wounded; a total of 161 casualties from 302 who went into action. The body of Lt Col Deacon and many others were never found. Most of the casualties are commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres.
