As with the Rifle Volunteers information on the Militia in the County is scarce and incomplete.
The second or East Essex Militia was formed in June 1759 and redesignated as the Essex Rifles Militia in 1859 and the 3rd Bn the Essex Regiment in 1881.
The West Essex Militia was redesignated as the 4th Bn the Essex Regiment in 1881.
