A number of units were formed in the early part of the 20th century, all adopting badges based upon that of the Essex Yeomanry cap badge of the time.

Later, the Royal Defence Corps (subsequently, National Defence Companies) were formed before then re-badging to the 7th (Territorial) Bn Essex Regiment.

Volunteer Aid Detachments

Formed in 1909 to provide medical support to Territorial units and resources for hospitals and ambulances on mobilisation.

Formed in 1912 to provide individuals with local geographic knowledge to support Home Army commanders.

Veteran and National Reserve

Formed for former members of the Regular Army and those unable to re-enlist in the Territorial Army to register their support without any training obligation. Renamed as the National Reserve in 1911.

High Sheriff’s volunteer badge.

Given to those who had offered but failed to enter the King’s Forces due to some personal disability. 1914-15.

Formed 1916 from the Garrison Battalions of the line infantry regiments to provide home security and guard duties.
