Yeomanry i.e. volunteer cavalry were first formed in the County in 1797.
In the early part of the 19th Century various independent Yeomanry Cavalry Troops existed, becoming regimented in 1828. Fortunes rose and fell during the mid to late 1800s with the unit operating for a time without Government pay, being funded by the Commanding Officer, and complete disbandment by 1877.
A Regiment of Imperial Yeomanry was raised in 1901, with “Imperial” removed from the title in 1908. It has subsequently served as Yeomanry, Gunners and today as Signallers.
A Band and affiliated cadet unit have served alongside.
