The Volunteer Training Corps was a voluntary home defence militia for those men who were over military age or whose commitments made it difficult to volunteer for the armed forces. From May 1915 these units started to be organised into County regiments and in 1916 they became volunteer regiments of the Volunteer Force. From 1918 they became numbered battalions of their associated local infantry regiment.

The VTC was suspended in December 1918 and officially disbanded in January 1920.
