By 1948 the Essex Regiment was already a single regular battalion regiment and in 1958 the 1st Battalion was amalgamated with the Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Regiment as the single-Battalion 3rd Battalion, East Anglian Regiment (16th/44th of Foot).

In 1964 it became the 3rd Battalion, the Royal Anglian Regiment, which continued until 1992 when it was reduced to a single Company (C Coy) of the 1st Battalion, the Royal Anglian Regiment.
