The first independent Troop in the County was formed in 1797 and there were fifteen in existence within a year.  By 1828 all had been disbanded.  In 1830 the West Essex Yeomanry Cavalry was raised, serving until disbandment in 1877 (including a five-year period at the CO’s personal expense.)  In 1889 an Essex Troop of the Loyal Suffolk Hussars was formed by Colonel R.B. Colvin, who was later to form the Essex Imperial Yeomanry.
